Early Dentistry

A Child’s First Dental Visit

A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled around his/her first birthday. The objective of this one year old visit is the exam. Your child has several teeth at this point and checking for early decay and other problems is important. Diet and snacking can be discussed and parental questions can be answered.

Why Primary Teeth (baby teeth) are Important

Primary teeth are important for several reasons. Foremost, good teeth permit a child to eat and maintain good nutrition. Healthy teeth allow for clear pronunciation and speech habits. Primary teeth also guide eruption of permanent teeth when the time comes.

Last but not least, the self image that healthy teeth give a child is immeasurable.

General Treatment

Our practice can provide a wide range of dental services that allow you to keep your child’s dental care consistent within one practice. Emphasis is placed on preventive care for our patients. The basis of preventive care includes instruction on diet, proper oral hygiene techniques used at home and regular dental checkups with cleanings.

We provide many preventive measures to keep your child’s teeth clean and healthy, including dental sealants and fluoride treatments. We also educate parents in early detection of some common problems children may face, such as baby bottle tooth decay and thumb sucking.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedation during dental treatment. There are different types of sedation, including nitrous oxide also known as “laughing gas” and oral sedatives. We also offer Deep Sedation through Pediatric Dental Anesthesiology Associates. You can learn more about PDAA and their services by visiting the PDAA website.

Patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. Procedures like fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions and cosmetic procedures often require sedation.

Sedation is endorsed by the American Dental Association and is an effective way to make many patients comfortable during their dental visit. Before receiving a sedative or anesthetic it is important to inform your dentist about any medications or medical treatment your child is receiving.
